Hortiel is the god of Plant Life and Mountains. He created the Plains Minotaurs. He is chaotic good and his symbol is a sprouting seed under a mountain.
He often ventures into Sahl under the guise of a dirty, leathery man named Orethil. In this form, he has a huge grey beard and sparkling green eyes. He dislikes violence and is forbidden to interfere directly in the affairs of the mortal races. He often appears along in a shack, always with his prized pumpkin patch.
Hortiel bound Kelrek into the book known as Kelrek's Hide on the night that the Sahlite fell over Copperforge. He was unable to prevent Snips Cutlass from killing the Sahlite, but he did banish her severed arm before Snips could acquire it.
The party encounters Hortiel on several occasions, at first unknowing his true nature. Outside of Copperforge, he gives them all powerful seeds. In Gilborn, he agrees to help them rebind Kelrek.
